Administrative / Biographical history
John Patrick Hanrahan was born in 1939 in Victoria. A freelance writer and noted literary critic, he started his career with multiple degrees in theology and the arts. After studying at the Melbourne College of Divinity, he entered the priesthood in 1965 where he served five years as a Roman Catholic Priest. Hanrahan became a lecturer in literature upon leaving the priesthood, teaching for twelve years at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Later in life, he published reviews and literary contributions for newspapers and magazines such as Australian Book Review, The Age and The Australian before focusing on personal writing. In addition to poetry and short fiction he wrote O Excellent Virgin : A Novel in Stories published in 1990 and From Eternity to Here : Memoirs of an Angry Priest published posthumously in 1997.
