Australian poet and academic Julian Croft was born in Newcastle in 1941, graduating the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Arts in 1961. After working as a production assistant and a research assistant, Croft completed a Master of Arts and travelled in Europe and Africa. In 1970, he returned to Australia and took up a lectureship at the University of New England. He was subsequently promoted to Senior Lecturer (1975), Associate Professor (1992) and elected to a chair in 1994. Croft also has a long standing connection with the Association for the Study of Australian Literature, as a foundational member in 1978 and as a life member after leaving the committee in 1989.
As well as his work as an academic, Croft's poetry has been published prolifically, along with criticisms, novels, short stories and reviews. His poetry collection Breakfasts in Shanghai was the 1985 Australasian regional winner of a Commonwealth Poetry Prize
