WWII in the Southwest Pacific 1941-1945
Special Collections holds a number of manuscripts and rare books that relate to conflict to the conflicts in the Southwest Pacific theatre in World War Two, including theatres of war in Northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Britain, the Coral Sea, and the Solomon Islands. The collection particularly focuses on the Australian contribution to that effort. Parts of the collection include diaries and testimonies from Australian military personnel, as well as rare photographs from official war photographers and journalists.

Guide to the Papers of Albert Palazzo

These papers and materials were used to write Albert Palazzo’s book “Defenders of Australia” – his book about the Third Division. Sections of this book cover the 3rd division’s service in the South West Pacific theatre of the war during WW2. His papers include materials relating to the conflict, including completed questionnaires by ex-personnel on “3rd Division Signals in World War II” and “3rd Division AASC in World War II” with accompanying related correspondence and additional information/material (compiled 1997-2001).

We lived with danger : a history of the Australian Corvette HMAS Stawell (J348) 1943-1945
An account of the activities of HMAS Stawell (J348), a Minesweeping vessel constructed in Australia and launched in April 1943. The vessel was primarily engaged in escorting convoys from the east coast of Australia to ports in New Guinea and saw action in this area, along with later service in the Phillipines and Hong Kong during the later stages of the war.

Rabaul Area – Gazelle Photographs (aerial photos) – Intelligence 1943
An internal print book published by Allied Land Forces, South West Pacific Area & Allied Air Forces, Directorate of Intelligence & Central Interpretation Unit. This contains a compilation of official intelligence on the New Britain/Rabaul area of the conflict, a key base of operations for the Japanese. It contains 27 accompanied pages of maps and aerial photographs collected by Allied Air Forces showing the geography and the terrain of the battlefield, including vegetation, roads and trails for The Gazelle Penninsula, Southern New Ireland, and Duke of York Island.

Report on Operation Oboe On Borneo 1945
A declassified report published by the Australian Military Forces in 1945 on the initial stages of the capture of Borneo which began in May 1945. The report covers “Oboe One”, the successful amphibious landing on Tarakan Island by the Australian 26th Brigade on May 1, 1945. The report contains illustrations and maps of the battle.
