Scope and Content of Guide

Media-2165c9ab36315b8

This guide is an introduction to UNSW Special Collections manuscript and oral histories relating to contemporary Australian politics from 1996 to the present day, collected by the Howard Library to represent various sides of the political landscape.

Featuring is the personal archive of former Prime Minister, the Honourable John Winston Howard, OM, AC [JHL 001], dating from his election to Parliament in 1974 through his long political career to 2007. Additionally, by special arrangement with the National Archives of Australia, the official record of Howard’s parliamentary career is held as the John Howard Collection [NAA 001].

Also included are the archives of Cabinet ministers, politicians and staffers associated with successive Howard governments, 1996-2007, and individuals associated with significant events and affairs of state. Two items record recollections of former Australia Labor Party Cabinet Ministers, Barry Cohen and Tom Uren.

Collectively these significant holdings document many of the major issues and machinations of Australian politics – from all sides of the political divide – and constitute a rich record of late 20th century and early 21st century Australian history.
