Napoleonic Wars
Special Collections Research Guide
Scope and Content of Guide
This guide is an introduction to UNSW Special Collections manuscript and rare book sources relating to the Napoleonic War period, broadly arranged in three sections by materials relating to 1. Napoleon Bonaparte and 2. Duke of Wellington, together general works listed under the heading 3. Historical & Literary Context. There is a high degree of crossover and multiple works within each section relate to both historical figures and the Napoleonic War period more generally.
Highlights include three small collections containing original manuscripts relating to the Duke of Wellington (including examples of his signature) and his funeral (including a scrapbook kept by the family who constructed his funeral carriage). Some of the material appears to have been owned by Sir Herbert Maxwell (1845-1937), one of Wellington’s biographers, and contains Maxwell’s handwritten annotations. Other collection strengths include a selection of early 19th century rare books containing magnificent engraved Napoleonic War scenes, together with a small quantity of rare books formerly belonging to the private libraries of Napoleon and Wellington (and bearing their armorial bindings).
