Collection Description

This collection comprises photocopies of research papers, correspondence, notes, drafts, maps and audio cassette tapes of interviews for Gavin Keating's works, including "The right man for the job' : an assessment of Lieutenant General S.G. Savige as a senior commander', B.A. (Honours) thesis (1995), The right man for the right job : Lieutenant General Sir Stanley Savige as a military commander (2006), and A tale of three battalions : combat morale and battle fatigue in the 7th Australian Infantry Brigade, Bougainville, 1944-45 (2007).

Administrative / Biographical history

Gavin Keating is an infantry officer in the Australian Regular Army. He has served in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, Special Air Service Regiment and the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment and has deployed on operations to East Timor, Bougainville and the Middle East.

He graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1994; completed a B.A. Honours at the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1995, and a Master of Strategic Affairs at the Australian National University in 2004.

Keating is also a military historian and his works include:

The collection was donated by Gavin Keating in one instalment.

Scope and Content

The collection comprises photocopies of official Australian military operational material and reports from the Australian War Memorial and the National Archives of Australia, including copies of unit operational reports, messages, minutes of staff conferences, general staff memoranda, appreciations, procedures, administrative instructions and intelligence summaries. Also included are photocopies of personal papers, correspondence and diaries, journal articles, extracts from books and theses, newspaper cuttings, drafts, maps, transcripts and audio cassette tapes of interviews.

The collection has been arranged in box then folder order.
