Alan Wearne is an Australian poet and writer. He was born and educated in Melbourne and considers himself a Melbourne poet 'living in exile' while based outside his home city. He has been involved in the Australian poetry scene since the 1960s and has won a number of awards for his writing, including the Grace Leven Prize for Poetry in 2008 for The Australian Popular Songbook.

One of his better known works is the verse novel The Nightmarkets (1986), which won the Australian Literary Studies Gold Medal and National Book Council Award for Australian Literature. Wearne followed with another verse novel, The Lovemakers: Book One, in 2001. This won the Arts Queensland Judith Wright Calanthe Prize for Poetry, the Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry and 2002 Book of the Year at the NSW Premier's Literary Awards.

Until late 2016, Wearne was Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Wollongong, and also taught at Curtin University.

The collection was acquired from Alan Wearne in 1995.

Scope and Content

A collection of literary papers of Alan Wearne. The collection consists largely of material relating to the stage adaption of Wearne's verse novel Nightmarkets (1986). This adaption was developed by James Lawson and the Students of Monash University Student Theatre in 1994. There are also notes with other dates and photocopies of news clippings from the 1970s, although the actual date of creation is not clear.
