Dorothy Coade Hewett was an Australian feminist poet, novelist and playwright. She attended the University of Western Australia (UWA), where the joined the Communist Party of Australia (CPA), from which she would resign in 1968. She moved to Sydney in 1948, working in a spinning mill and writing for the CPA under pseudonyms. In 1958, she took up a teaching position at the UWA and began writing again.
Her career as a writer was significant, publishing three novels, 15 plays, many anthologies of poetry, radio and screen plays, short fiction, musicals, articles, and one volume of an autobiography. She was granted several fellowships by the Australia Council, including a lifetime emeritus fellowship. In 1986, she was awarded an Order of Australia. In 2001, she received the Christopher Brennan Award. The Dorothy Hewett Award for an unpublished manuscript was established in 2015 by UWA Publishing.
