This collection comprises manuscript papers and related material produced or accumulated by Tom Thompson and Elizabeth Butel.

Administrative / Biographical history

David John Tom Thompson was born on the 21 October 1953 in Parkes, New South Wales. He was educated at Broken Hill School, Wollongong High School and Macquarie University. He is poet, editor and publisher, and has worked as a bookshop manager, freelance journalist and publisher. He was literary publisher for Angus & Robertson, 1990-1993, associate publisher with Imprint Collins Australia, 1988-1990, publisher for the Australian Bicentennial Authority, 1984-1988, Publishing Coordinator 'Encyclopedia of the Australian people', 1984-1988, Producer Sydney Writers' Week, 1984-1988, Book Editor the National Times, 1982-1986, journalist with the Sydney morning herald, 1982-1988, editor of Red Press, 1978-1982 and associate editor at Currency Press, 1977-1980. As well as editing periodical publications Dodo, Leatherjacket and the Australian small press review, 1976-1979. He has also been involved in publishing ventures of his own including ETT Imprint, which represents nearly one hundred Australian authors and estates, many of which were purchased from the Angus & Robertson backlist in the mid-1990s and the Angrier Penguins Press.

Elizabeth Ann Butel was born on the 17 January 1951 in Sydney, New South Wales. She received a B.A. Dip. Ed. from Sydney University, 1973, Art Certificate from East Sydney Technical College, 1978 and Diploma of Art from City Art Institute, 1981. She has worked as a secondary school teacher, freelance journalist, writer/editor and publisher.

Acquisition Details

The collection was acquired from Tom Thompson and Elizabeth Butel in several instalments from 1987 to 1994.

Scope and Content

This collection comprises correspondence, manuscripts and associated papers for works by Tom Thompson and Elizabeth Butel. The collection also contains material relating to Thompson's publishing career with Collins and Angus & Robertson, together with material concerning the Australian Bicentennial Authority publications program and Sydney Writers' Week.
