The collection comprises literary papers and related material written or collected by Mark O'Connor.

Mark Kevin O'Connor was born in Melbourne, Victoria on 19 March 1945. He was educated at Xavier College, Melbourne before beginning his university studies at the University of Melbourne. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree with first-class honours in English and Classics in 1965.

O'Connor is one of Australia's best-known environmental poets. He has taught English literature and been Writer-in-residence at various Australian universities and colleges. His first book of poetry was inspired by the Great Barrier Reef and he was later commissioned to write poetry on the high country for the New South Wales National Parks Service. He has received numerous grants and fellowships to support his writing. In 1977 he was awarded a Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship to spend two years living and writing in the Mediterranean region.

Mark O'Connor has received the following awards and nominations for his work:
ACT Literary Award, 1993: winner FAW John Shaw Neilson Poetry Award, 1990: third for Dot paintings
FAW C J Dennis Literary Award for Natural History, 1990: highly commended for The great forest
Northern Territory Literary Awards, Bill Harney Bicentennial Poetry Prize, 1988: highly commended for Bamboo Creek
Tom Collins Poetry Prize, 1982: joint winner for Naxos Beach
European Branch of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies Short Story Competition, ca.1979: winner for The black cabaret
Artlook/Shell Literary Award, 1977: second for The Batavia wreck.

Acquisition Details

The collection was acquired from Mark O'Connor in several instalments from 1986-1994.

Scope and Content

The papers of Mark O'Connor include correspondence, literary works, photographs and audio visual material. The collection also includes material concerning O'Connor's involvement with Australians for an Ecologically Sustainable Population, and with his engagement in debates concerning Australian arts funding.
