Administrative / Biographical history
Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ansett_Australia
The Ansett Australia airline group collapsed in September 2001 leaving 16,000 people without jobs. Founded in 1935 as Ansett Airways, the company was Australia's second major airline for much of its existence.
Purchased by Air New Zealand in 2000, Ansett soon faced severe financial challenges including greater competition from Qantas and the new Virgin Blue. Three days after '9/11', the airline and its subsidiaries were grounded by the company's administrator. More than 47,000 passengers were stranded, Ansett staff rallied against Air New Zealand which was financially rescued by the New Zealand government. Limited Ansett services resumed on 1 October following a Commonwealth guarantee with an agreement that businessmen Solomon Lew and Lindsay Fox would purchase Ansett's assets. They later withdrew when the Howard government declined to assist.
Ansett ceased flying on 4 March 2002 and the company's assets were sold. Ansett employees eventually received 96 per cent of their entitlements. The Government did provide a A$350 million loan which was repaid by the airline's administrators while a $10 seat levy was imposed on all Australian airline passengers until June 2003.
