Ian McLachlan served as a Liberal party member in the House of Representatives from 1990 to 1998. He was Minister for Defence in the Howard Government from 1996 to 1998. Before entering politics, he served as president of the National Farmers Federation from 1984 to 1988.

The collection was donated to The Howard Library by Ian McLachlan in 2019.

This collection includes correspondence, speeches, files, and other material kept by The Honourable Ian McLachlan AO. The majority of the collection relates to the Hindmarsh Island Bridge.
